Book Discussion Questions

General Discussion Questions 
 
Here are some general questions to use for a book discussion.  Thanks to the Chouteau County Library for submitting this list.
 
 
  • Did you like the author’s writing style and organization of the book?
 
  • Were there too many or too few details?
 
  • Did you find this book uplifting and/or depressing? Why?
 
  • What are the major themes of the novel?
 
  • What symbolism is used in the book?
 
  • Do you relate to any of the characters? Which ones? Why?
 
  • How does the author develop the characters? Does any character change from the beginning to the end?
 
  • How did you feel about the ending?
 
  • Is the plot believable?
 
  • What does the title mean?
 
  • Does the setting come to life for you? How important is the setting to the story?
 
  • What did the author attempt to do in the book? Was it successful?
 
  • What role does fate or coincidence play in the characters’ fortunes?
 
  • Could this story have taken place anywhere else? Does the setting function almost as a character in the book or is it relatively unimportant?
 
  • Did the book have any problems? What changes might you suggest to make an even more effective book?
